STATEMENT: ASHLEY HARTMEIER-PRIGG ON POLICE VIOLENCE

To the Beaverton community, I want to say unequivocally that, Black lives matter. Daunte Wright’s life mattered.

To the members of our Black community, I am grieving, I am angry, and despite the fact that I may never truly feel the same levels of pain our Black community is experiencing right now, I am truly sorry that we are once again mourning the life of a Black man whose life ended at the hands of police. Elected government officials have a duty to ensure the safety of their residents, and I assure you that I am committed to the safety of all members of the Beaverton community, regardless of the color of their skin.

In response to police killings and misconduct last year, the Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission (HRAC) conducted a thorough community engagement process on the Beaverton Police Department. The commission took input from various community members and the Beaverton Police Department. The HRAC published their recommendations in January 2021 and presented them to the City Council that month. In order to ensure that lives are not lost in Beaverton the way that Daunte Wright, Brionna Taylor or George Floyd were lost, I am committed to adopting the recommendations made by the HRAC.

What can you do?

  • Call or email your Representative and Senator to vote to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021

  • Contact state representatives and senators to Support for Oregon Police Accountability in HB2928, HB2934, HB2936, and SB 621

  • Attend a Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission meeting the first Wednesday of every month: https://www.beavertonoregon.gov/284/Human-Rights-Advisory-Commission

  • If you decide to protest, please take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19

In Solidarity,

Ashley
